Jerusalem in Revelation

2021-07-26

Jerusalem is mentioned by name three times in Revelation (Revelation 3:12; 21:2; 21:10). All three times, it is referring to New Jerusalem, which will come down from heaven. The Spirit cannot even call earthly Jerusalem by its name when the occasion arises: “the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified” (Revelation 11:8).

The lesson? There is nothing for us here, not even the city where God once chose to dwell. We are strangers and pilgrims. With Abraham, we look “for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God” (Hebrews 11:10). There is perfect home for us, created by the Lord.
