I Will Incline Mine Ear to a Parable (Psalm 49:4)

I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp. (Psalms 49:4)

Previously, we saw how Jesus Christ fulfilled Psalm 78:2 with His parables. Here, we consider this concept further. The psalmist considers how people trust in their wealth only to have it taken away on the day of their death. Nobody can save them from that hour:

They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:) That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption. (Psalms 49:6-9)

They believe, however, that somehow death will never come for them. However, while no man can deliver them from certain death, “God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah” (Psalms 49:15). The highly esteemed in this life “shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light. Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish” (Psalms 49:19-20). Not trusting in the accolades of this world but trusting in Christ is eternal life. The Kingdom of Heaven is wholly contradictory to the affairs of this life.
