I AM Statement #8: I Am (John 8:58)

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. (John 8:58)

After arguing with the religious leaders about who He is, He made this claim. It is a strange sentence grammatically. Jesus here declared His eternality and deity. If you think He wasn’t, in the following verse, the leaders were gathering stones to kill Him for blasphemy!

Unlike the other “I AM” statements, there is no mistake about this one. Jesus was equating Himself with the God of the Old Testament, using the name “I am” as He declared Himself in Exodus 3:14.

If Christ is a mere created mortal man, we are all still in our sins. It took the sinless Son of God to redeem us from our sins.
