The Holy Spirit as the Expounder of Scriptures

Consider the road to Emmaus, when Jesus came along side to the disciples who did not know Him. “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27). Only the Lord Himself could reveal the meaning of the Scriptures to the disciples. This was the result: “And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” (Luke 24:32). Today, the Spirit represents Jesus in this capacity. “Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures” (Luke 24:45). And again, “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost” (John 20:22).

The Spirit knows all the things of God. “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God” (1 Corinthians 2:9-10). And again, “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14). We can only get the true meaning of Scripture through the Holy Spirit. We must seek Him for the meaning of the Word and not rely on our own intellect.
