The Comfort of the Holy Spirit

2022-01-26

The Holy Spirit is called the Comforter four times in the Scriptures: John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7. The word “Comforter” is used in one other place in the Bible as the word “advocate,” used of the Lord Jesus Christ. That is one way we can see how He is the Comforter, as Christ comforts us when we fail.

As one who uses the Word to teach us and remind us of all things spiritual, the Spirit brings the peace of the Son to us (John 14:27). He bears witness of the Son through us (John 15:26-27). Though He brings comfort to us, He gives no comfort to the world (John 16:8-11).

This is how Jesus remains “God with us” in this age; His Spirit reminds us of His presence.

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. (John 14:18)
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Matthew 5:4)
