Jesus Did Not Commit Himself Unto Them, Because He Knew All Men (John 2:23-25)

Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man. (John 2:23-25)

Our Lord and Savior knows the hearts of men as only God can know. “...for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men” (1 Kings 8:39).

Though they trusted in Him, Jesus did not trust in them (“believed” and “commit” are the same word). People are quick to receive the blessings of the Lord, like the miracles they saw. Many were not ready for the type of Savior He was. It was a mere couple of days between the hosannas of Palm Sunday and the shouts of “Crucify Him.” People are fickle, and Jesus knew this from the beginning.

Jesus was not coming to set up a worldly kingdom the first time. He came to take away our sins. We like our sins pretty much, or otherwise we wouldn’t do them. The cleaving away of sin is often a painful process that is another type of miracle from the Lord.

Know that we are sinners, and the Lord Jesus Christ came to take away our sin. “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Embrace the entirety of His salvation.
