Seekest Thou Great Things for Thyself? (Jeremiah 45:5)

Previously, we saw how Jeremiah gave the Word of the Lord to Baruch, who wrote it in a scroll to read to the people. Around that same time, the Lord revealed a message for Baruch personally, who was distressed by God’s message of destruction. Baruch had said, “Woe is me now! for the LORD hath added grief to my sorrow; I fainted in my sighing, and I find no rest” (Jeremiah 45:3).

The Lord would indeed destroy Jerusalem. Considering this, the Lord told Baruch, “And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest” (Jeremiah 45:5).

We may not be promised this temporal life, but we know we are promised eternal life. The Lord “will bring evil upon all flesh.” Why seek things in this life for yourself? Everything we see here will be gone one day. Seek the things of the Lord.
