God Is Not Mocked

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. (8) For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. (9) And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (10) As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. (Galatians 6:7-10)

Throughout this letter, Paul had demonstrated repeatedly that salvation is by believing on Jesus Christ, and not maintaining the works of the Old Testament law. Whatever the Galatians decided to believe, it did not affect God in any way. They can either believe the lie that the good works of the Judaizers can save them, or they can believe that Jesus Christ is sufficient for salvation.

If one believes that salvation is by works, they are not truly saved, and will experience the wrath of God in hell. If one believes on Jesus Christ, they will receive eternal life. However, even if a true believer gets caught up in false doctrine, they will not experience that eternal life in this life, and rather live a very carnal existence. We need to choose that Christ is indeed sufficient, so that we can walk in the Spirit in this life and bear fruit to Him.

The well doing of Galatians 6:9 is the result of sowing to the Spirit. The spiritual man is the only one that can do well, and he will reap. We often think that the unsaved should be the ones that should be the main recipients of our love and service. However, Galatians 6:10 tells us to do good “especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” As Jesus told us to love others as He loved us, we see there is a purpose clause in His commandment: “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35). By serving others within the church, we also do a service to those who are on the outside; they too can know the power of Christ through our charity.
