Futile Resistance Against the King

2011-05-28

Psalm 2:1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
2:2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
2:3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
2:5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
2:6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
2:10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
2:11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
2:12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

Psalm 2 was quoted by the Apostles in Acts 4 in regard to Jesus Christ, and the opposition he received from both Gentiles and Jews. The forces of darkness in this world fight in vain against the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ, and they will see their demise.

In verse 4, we see that God laughs at his enemies’ fruitless efforts to destroy his works. He answers them in sore displeasure.

Jesus Christ alone is king. When he was risen from the dead, Jesus said in Matthew 28:18: “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” He is the only begotten Son of God. In verse 8, he is entrusted the kingdoms of this world. We know that anyone who believes on him shall be saved, but he also will be the judge of the nations when he returns again.

This is all a warning to those who may seek to destroy the works of God in his Son Jesus. Verses 11-12 admonishes them to serve him, for “blessed are all they that put their trust in him.”

Throughout the ages, there have been attempts to destroy the Faith, and it has never happened. The Jews, followed by the Romans, all tried to destroy the Gospel in its early days, but today the Faith had spread to most of the planet, with the Bible as the number one best selling book in history. The Faith is why our nation has been blessed since the beginning, even despite our shortcomings. All of you who hear, do not be so quick to reject Jesus Christ, for he will return to the earth and judge it. All of you who name the name of Christ, do not take such a great salvation lightly, for we are here to be his voice, publishing the glad tidings of salvation by grace through faith.
