Free Food (John 6:26)

John’s Gospel records the feeding of the 5,000 just like the Synoptics. However, John finishes the story for us. Those men who were fed followed Jesus to the other side of the sea, but Jesus told them their true motivation:

Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. (John 6:26)

They came for the free food! Can you blame them? However, these men wanted the kingdom benefits without the King. They wanted their physical needs met, which is understandable, but their spiritual needs were forgotten. But the spiritual must come first. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).
