I Set My Face Like a Flint (Isaiah 50:7)

For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. (Isaiah 50:7)
Knowing that Jesus would be tortured and killed, He set His face like a flint to go to Jerusalem. “And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51). There our Lord went to make us captives of sin free. He knew the cost but was resolved to make us free from sin and give us eternal life.
Now we have real freedom. We have received the atonement. We have been made dead to sin and given new life. But what is the servant, but to be like His master? We pick up our cross daily, setting our face toward Jerusalem like a flint, and let the cross be applied to every last bit of self. Let the Scripture be fulfilled today, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).
