A Famine in the Land (Amos 8:11)

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it. (Amos 8:11-12)

In the days before the fall of the northern kingdom, the Lord said that a famine of hearing the Word of God was coming. They would seek various idols set up in different cities, looking for the Word of God in all the wrong places.

The Word of the Lord is what brings life. The preaching of the Gospel is what brings salvation. When people stop listening to the Word, what hope is there for them? When the one way for them to be saved no longer has any impact, destruction is imminent.

I don’t think that our entire society is there yet, but we are moving that way. Take care how you hear and know that the Lord extends mercy in the person of Jesus Christ. He took the wrath away from us and put it on Himself at the cross. He is risen and enthroned in heaven until His return. If you reject Him, you have rejected the only way to be saved from the wrath of God.
