A False Vision and Divination (Jeremiah 14:14)

Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. (Jeremiah 14:14)

In Jeremiah’s time, many prophets made up whatever people wanted to hear. In their case, it was a message of peace even though the armies of Babylon were closing in on Jerusalem. Why would they lie? It could be fear of the people, wanting more followers or fame, or if their livelihood depended on their preaching, more money. We see examples of these throughout the Bible, such as Korah and Balaam.

What about today? What do false prophets preach today? Much of the same thing. For example, there are plenty that preach that Jesus is a path to prosperity. This is a false Jesus that circumvented the cross. When the preacher is flashing his jewels and fancy attire, you are likely dealing with a false prophet.

Throughout the Scriptures, most of the preaching is bad news. There is more cursing than blessing. There is more destruction than building up. This is because sin has ravaged our world and the human condition. But with much bad news and evil report comes a greater and more glorious good news. The greatest news is that Jesus Christ came to save the biggest sinners like you and me.

We lose everything in this world but gain everything in Christ.
