Evil Communications Corrupt Good Manners (1 Corinthians 15:33)

Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. (1 Corinthians 15:33)

The context for this quote is that the Corinthian church was being influenced by lying teachers that were denying the resurrection of the dead. This kind of influence affects our thinking and our lives; we must avoid those influences when we can.

From a human standpoint, Paul was quoting a famous worldly play at the time: Menander’s Thais. The recipients would have known this quote. However, the concept is embedded deep within the Bible.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. (Psalms 1:1-2)
My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. (Proverbs 1:15-16)
He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. (Proverbs 13:20)

Who you hang around with will affect your thinking and actions. A godly man can be turned out of the way because of the voices he listens to.
