Comfort Ye, Comfort Ye My People (Isaiah 40:1-2)
2023-06-17
Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD’S hand double for all her sins. (Isaiah 40:1-2)
This is a change of tone from the previous verses, where the Lord told Hezekiah that Babylon would come and destroy Jerusalem. That warfare would come to an end, and a herald would come and proclaim the way to the Lord’s coming. “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God” (Isaiah 40:3). Through the coming of the Lord Jesus, our iniquity was pardoned, for He received the wrath of God for us.
Today, as we may go through terrible things in this world, He promises that He will come again. Be comforted in this.
