By What Authority Doest Thou These Things? (Luke 20:2)

Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? (Luke 20:2)

The scribes asked the Lord this after He cleansed the Temple the second time. Jesus did not give them an answer that day. Their answer would depend on who else was listening, such as the crowd who was following Jesus that day. They had to admit publicly that Jesus was Lord or that He was just a man fulfilling His own whims. They feigned ignorance to get out of the dilemma.

Likewise, every person will go to the grave either confessing that Jesus is Lord or just another man. He was raised from the dead, showing Himself to be Lord of all.
