Why Then Is All This Befallen Us? (Judges 6:13)

Sometimes God is silent because we need to trust in His timing. Other times God is silent because people are in rebellion against Him. I am thinking on a national level now. Consider Gideon’s questions here:

Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites. (Judges 6:13)

The answer was earlier in the passage. “And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years” (Judges 6:1).

Rejection of the Lord will result in the Lord’s judgment. One could rightly argue that there is no geopolitical nation today that corresponds to Old Testament Israel. Also, one could argue that America is not a Christian nation. Though a country might not choose to worship the Lord, it does not mean the Lord is not Lord of all. He will judge those who reject Him, especially those who have seen His favor for so long. We are riding the coattails of previous generations’ blessings. We hang by a thread by the grace of God. “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near” (Isaiah 55:6).
