I Am a Man Under Authority (Matthew 8:8-9)

A proper view of ourselves is imperative in the Christian life. Previously, we saw how we judge others without dealing with our own selves. After the sermon on the mount, we see a series of narratives that establish Jesus’ authority over uncleanness, disease, nature, and the spiritual realm. Clearly, this authority demonstrates that He is the Son of God. Recognizing that He is the Son of God has a certain corollary, that we are men under authority. We must come to this place.

The centurion understood this when he sought the Lord to heal his servant:

The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it (Matthew 8:8-9)

He was a powerful man in a worldly army, and he had superiors and servants. But God has no superior. He understood Jesus’ authority over the entire creation, and that a mere decision from Him would end the torment of his servant even from miles away. Proximity does not limit the Son of God. Everything obeys Jesus when He issues a decree: be it spirit beings, germs, or inanimate objects.

We are men under authority, His authority. We embrace His cross, and we release whatever right or authority we suppose we have in this world over life and circumstance. All authority is of Him.
