As Becometh Saints

2024-02-03

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. (Ephesians 5:3-5)

Christians will agree that fornication, uncleanness, and covetousness are sins that are to be avoided. They are not appropriate for the children of God.

But the middle verse is of most consequence: “Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient.” The speech reflecting foolishness and uncleanness is equally condemned. Be careful with words, for they indicate an inner reality of your mind.

But what is appropriate speech for the saint? “but rather giving of thanks.”
