The word “Alleluia” is the English representation of the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew phrase “praise ye the LORD” (הַֽלְלוּ־יָֽהּ) which shows up 25 times, mostly in the psalms. It is a plural imperative; you would say this when you command multiple people to praise the Lord. You may have seen this spelled “hallelujah.”
This transliteration appears four times in the New Testament, all of which are in Revelation 19. People in heaven use this phrase, praising God for His righteous judgment and for His all-powerful reign.
This is a Biblical phrase. Whenever you say “Alleluia,” you are spurring others to praise God for the wonderful things He has done.
And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. (Revelation 19:6)
