1 Timothy 2:9-10: Adorned with Good Works

1 Timothy 2:9-10

We see here that the command given to women here is “In like manner also” (1 Timothy 2:8). Women have their commands just as the men do. Their command deals with two aspects: appearance and conduct.

Women should “adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety” (1 Timothy 2:9). Modest clothing will not draw attention. Women (though it also applies to the men as well) should not be known for drawing attention to their appearance, but rather to their character. That character then in turn draws attention to Christ, who transformed the character.

The “modest apparel” is then qualitatively modified by the phrase “with shamefacedness and sobriety.” “Shamefacedness” is translated “reverence” in Hebrews 12:28. We get the picture of self-control and respect. This sounds good not just for the women, but for everyone! The context here though ties with the appearance.

The Spirit also tells us that women should “adorn themselves... not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.” This is more of the same distractions from what is important: godly character. These things draw attention to appearance, but also may draw attention to one’s social status, such as gold, pearls, and expensive clothing. It may even be deceptive, if a woman is not truly rich, but wants the appearance of being so. All those things are ephemeral and unimportant.

Contrasting with the wealthy accessories is good works. Good works is the adorning “which becometh women professing godliness” (1 Timothy 2:10). Good works are the indicators of the work of the Lord in one’s life. You say you are godly? Good works accompany godliness.

These are good tips for everyone. Why is this directed at women? In my opinion, it seems like interest in fashion is more applicable to women. However, if you are a man that is interested in all of that, then by all means, this admonition applies!
